Bonny Doon, "Contra" Old Vine Field Blend, 2009, Central Coast, California
The nose on this wine is a hearty mixture of cassis, black olives, tabasco, jerky, and lots of dry green spice like oregano. Every once in a while, it's nice to get away from bright red fruit domination in a lot of red wine and the Contra delivered. The dry spice rub carries through to the flavor profile as well along with the olive juice, dark plum, and subtle grippy tannins. This is a light to medium bodied effort but with some serious flavors. You know, like a young skinny thinking old wise man who furrows his brow when presented with a particularly difficult zen koan like question. The acid is just barely present in this wine and lets the round fruit do the work on the front end. The Contra is not super complex/layered but is unique and balanced in its approach. Nothing like a value-driven cold night patio-pounder for the wine nerd in all of us! I would pair this with lighter fare such as vegetarian Italian food or hearty brown stews.
