Earlier this year, Australia's legendary Penfolds winery debuted the most expensive upon release "bottle" of wine ever. The bottle of 2004 Block 42 Cabernet Sauvignon is actually a meticuslouly hand-blown glass ampoule limited to a release of 12. $176,000 not only gets you the ampoule but Penfolds will actually send the wine-maker to your house to perform a special opening ceremony when you are ready for a glass. The news from down under got me thinking about the cheapest wine I have ever encountered, Trader Joe's equally legendary "two buck chuck." The properly named Charles Shaw California Cabernet retails for about $2.50 a bottle. At this point, the wine consumer is faced with a very difficult decision. One bottle of the Penfolds 2004 Block 242 or 70,000 bottles of the Charles Shaw. Sure the Penfolds' fruit is sourced from what is thought to be oldest continuously producing Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the world but then again the Charles Shaw is said to have a "jammy cherry flavor with christmas spice on the nose" and a smooth finish. Also for $176,000, you can buy a single bottle for every person currently residing in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Just a thought.
